Caption

Illustration of the curvature estimation procedure on a drawing by P. Pensabene of a column capital from the theatre of Ostia, dated around 12 BCE (Pensabene 1973, tav. LXXX, n. 204). Left: section of the archaeological drawing of the artifact. Center: the corresponding mask derived from the density, gradient and Laplacian thresholds. Right: the estimated local curvature with higher values in brighter colour. The colour normalization is done with respect to this figure maximum. As expected, it is more pronounced on the edges and angles.
